Traditional Courtyard House | Kabul | Afghanistan

Kabul has a rich history and little evidence is left of that in the capital today. In the past, the quarters of the old city were the center of culture and traditions. Few traditional courtyard houses are still intact reminding the citizens of the former glory in this part of the city. The rehabilitated traditional courtyard house is located in the old city and has been largely restored to its original structure. Same materials and traditional construction techniques as found in the original building are used in order to ensure compliancy with conservation guidelines. Many existing building elements, particularly the fine wood carving details, had to be studied in drawings and samples, before Afghan artisans and craftsmen were able to rehabilitate lost building details. A complete digital documentation of the building and registration with official institutions allowed the courtyard house to be recognized and recorded as a historic building to be preserved in the future. Construction completed in 2008.
