Sunken Mall | Beijing | China

The building is located within a commercial complex and is surrounded by a lake and theater. The concept study investigates a different approach to the typical shopping mall design. In contrary to a typical mall design, the study envisions the center of the building to be free. The open space acts as a larger courtyard open to the sky while the perimeter is filled with various programs of the shopping mall. By this, exciting new view relationships and circulation concepts are established and exploring the mall through tunnels, bridges and floating platforms becomes a whole new experience for visitors.  As the central courtyard plaza is sunken, the external perimeter design of the shopping mall encloses the center. By this, visitors feel more protected from noise while having a connection to the outside elements. The external perimeter is also envisioned as part of the landscape experience and encourages visitors to explore the site on foot.
